A couple of Blues were planning to sit on their couches Sunday for the first time since Feb. 14.

Although the team will continue its six-game road trip Thursday at the New York Islanders, it returned to St. Louis for a few days before heading to the Island.

Forward David Backes and defenseman Erik Johnson haven't been home since the middle of February, when they left for the Olympics. As soon as the gold-medal game ended, the two headed for Phoenix to resume the NHL season.

"It's nice to maybe have some days off," Blues defenseman Barret Jackman said. "With six games (consecutively) on the road, it's nice to have a few days in between and be at home. Guys will get a little rest and be back on the road again."

Chris Stewart savored his first NHL hat trick, both for what it did for his team and how far it showed he has come since a brief demotion to the minors last October. Stewart completed the hat trick with a penalty shot, and Milan Hejduk scored twice in his return from a seven-week injury layoff to help the Colorado Avalanche beat the St.

The St. Louis Blues are working on another late-season surge. Paul Kariya scored twice, combining with Brad Boyes for a pair of goals during a 17-second span of the first period, and the Blues extended their winning streak to a season-best five games with a 6-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

The St. Louis Blues have traded center Yan Stastny to Vancouver for forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie. The Blues announced the trade on Wednesday, hours before the NHL trade deadline. Labrie is 23 and had five goals, one assist and 69 penalty minutes for Manitoba of the American Hockey League. He was signed by Vancouver as a free agent in 2007.

More than two weeks off the ice didn't slow the St. Louis Blues' momentum. Andy McDonald scored his team-leading 20th goal and T.J. Oshie added a goal and an assist to help the St. Louis Blues beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-2 on Tuesday night for their fourth straight win. David Backes had a goal and an assist, and Jay McClement also scored for the Blues.

Blues acquire Fallon in swap with Blackhawks (AP)
The St. Louis Blues have acquired goaltender Joe Fallon from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for goalie Hannu Toivonen and defenseman Danny Richmond. The 25-year-old Fallon has played in 29 games this season with the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs. The Blues said Monday that Fallon will report to their AHL affiliate in Peoria, Ill.

Blues recall forward Derek Armstrong (AP)
The St. Louis Blues have recalled forward Derek Armstrong from their American Hockey League affiliate. The 36-year-old has played in 30 games this season with Peoria, scoring 22 goals. The center from Ottawa, Ontario, started with the Blues on Dec. 31 and stayed for five games. He played in 56 games last season with the Los Angeles Kings and has played in a total of 471 NHL games, scoring 221 goals.

Penguins trade for defenceman Leopold (CBC.ca)
