Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ryan Whitney will be out three to five months following surgery to correct a chronic problem with his left foot. The team didn't describe the nature of the problem in a statement released Saturday. Whitney told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review his left foot is misaligned and that attempts to correct it with orthopedic inserts in his skates didn't work.

Any suggestion coach Michel Therrien does not have the backing of general manager Ray Shero should now fall upon deaf ears. Therrien, who in his third full season guided the Penguins to the 2008 Stanley Cup final, signed a new contract on July 18. The final year of his current deal, set to expire after this season, was eliminated and Therrien got a three-year deal that will pay him around $900,000 annually. "Michel has done a tremendous job with our team over the past 2 1/2 seasons, developing our young players while leading us to division and conference championships and the Stanley Cup finals," Shero said. "He had one year remaining on his previous contract, and we could have simply talked about an extension.
