| Wilson, Ellis lead Predators past Thrashers (AP) |
|
A week ago, the Atlanta Thrashers looked like a surprise playoff contender even without Ilya Kovalchuk. Not anymore. Colin Wilson scored off an Atlanta miscue and Dan Ellis turned aside 30 shots, leading the Nashville Predators to a 2-1 victory over the slumping Thrashers on Tuesday night. Pekka Rinne has a nice big contract and Dan Ellis is talking about what other teams might be interested in him next season. But while Rinne has the money he might not have a solid grip on the No. 1 goaltender spot, and that could be a problem for the Predators. Rinne has started nine of the last 12 games for the Predators and is 4-3-2 during that stretch. Ellis started against Detroit on Friday night and lost for the first time since Jan. 29, a defeat that also came at Joe Louis Arena. Rinne gave up a self-professed "weak goal" to Mikael Samuelsson to tie the game Sunday afternoon at 2-2 in the third period. Unfortunately, this is not a rare problem for Rinne. "Down the stretch we are going to need good goalkeeping, plain and simple," coach Barry Trotz said.
