Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and the Panthers avoided arbitration when they agreed to a one-year deal. Bouwmeester, 24, can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2009-10 season. Bouwmeester's current deal is for $4.85 million. The Panthers hope to begin negotiations for a long-term deal soon, although Bouwmeester couldn't sign such a deal until Jan. 1. "I'm glad Jay is on board," said general manager Jacques Martin. "Sometime during the season, I hope to get it long term. We're progressing. We want to have a good start to the season, then address the issue. "We're real happy to have been able to get an agreement with Jay and his agent. We feel it satisfied both parties.

Bouwmeester will make between $4 million and $5 million next season, nearly doubling his salary, but the sides couldn't agree on a long-term deal that the Panthers sought.
