Marek Svatos is back on board with the Avalanche. Could captain Joe Sakic be next? "There's nothing new on that front," said Don Baizley, Sakic's agent. Sakic has said that he would make a decision about his future before training camp starts in September. He'll either return for a 20th NHL season or retire. The Avalanche still has plenty of money under the $56.7 million salary cap to spend on Sakic after signing restricted free-agent forward Marek Svatos to a two-year, $4.1 million contract. Svatos, 26, was scheduled to go to arbitration before signing a deal that will pay him $1.75 million in 2008-09 and $2.35 million in 2009-10. Svatos was leading the Avalanche in goals with 26 in 62 games last season before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament...

The Colorado Avalanche signed forward Marek Svatos to a two-year contract, avoiding an arbitration hearing Friday. Svatos scored 26 goals last season despite missing the final 16 games with a torn knee ligament. He tied Wojtek Wolski for the club lead with six game-winning goals. Svatos' 32 goals in 2005-06 were third among rookies behind Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
