Bruins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

You'll have to pardon the Bruins if they're a bit sensitive to the dangers of head shots in the NHL game.

It was two seasons ago that the Bruins lost Patrice Bergeron for most of the season and almost for a lot longer than that.

Sunday, a day after their own Michael Ryder laid a hit on Blake Comeau of the Islanders that was ruled a hit from behind but didn't look too bad, the Bruins saw Marc Savard knocked out by an open-ice elbow to the head by Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke.

Cooke, who has a history with the NHL discipline folks, appeared remorseful after he laid out Savard, who suffered a concussion, was taken from the ice on a stretcher and will, in coach Claude Julien's words, be out "for a while." There was no penalty called on the play.

"A guy like that has...

Malkin's goal carries Penguins past Bruins, 2-1 (AP)

Pittsburgh Penguins' Evgeni Malkin(notes), right, of Russia, shoots the puck toward Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas(notes) in the second period of an NHL hockey game in Pittsburgh, Sunday, March 7, 2010. Thomas made the stop but Malkin scored what proved to be the game-winner in the third period as the Penguins went on to win 2-1.

The Boston Bruins left Pittsburgh with a loss and a whole lot of anger after losing one of their best players to what they felt was a cheap-shot hit. Evgeni Malkin scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period after former linemate Pascal Dupuis tied it, and the Pittsburgh Penguins remained unbeaten since the Olympic break by beating the Bruins 2-1 on Sunday.

Thomas gets shootout win for Bruins vs. Leafs (AP)

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas(notes), left, makes a save on a shot by Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Phil Kessell during the first period of an NHL hockey game in Boston, Thursday, March 4, 2010. Thomas, a U.S. Olympian, back from Vancouver and back from a slump that sent the reigning Vezina Trophy-winner to the bench, made 24 saves in regulation and overtime and added three more in the shootout Thursday night to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 victory.

Tim Thomas picked up more at the Olympics than a silver medal and a dozen minutes of ice time. The U.S. backup once again looked like the goalie who won the 2009 Vezina Trophy on Thursday night, returning from a slump that left him on two different teams' benches to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in a shootout.

Many NHL deals done, but no blockbusters (AP)
So much for another big hockey boost. The NHL trade deadline came and went with a thud instead of a bang. Not that anyone expected Wednesday's deadline to come anywhere close to the excitement of Canada's Olympic gold medal win over the United States three days earlier, but it didn't even generate the buzz of previous trading days that created the wow factor.
