Canadiens Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey was determined to make a big splash as the National Hockey League draft was held in Montreal for the first time since 1993. He was hoping to piggyback on the excitement created on June 20 when it was announced that brothers Geoff, Andrew and Justin Molson had reached an agreement in principle to buy the team from George Gillett Jr.

But while Gainey and his staff pleased the fans by drafting a French-speaking Montrealer, he came up short in his attempt to make a trade for a big center.

"The draft usually serves as a catalyst for trades but there appears to be a logjam," said Gainey. "It looks as if we'll have to wait."

Gainey's No.
